@deadsuperhero
A gradient might work ( I like the idea), but it is all (gradient or not) very subjective. . .
I suppose the block button would be all that would be left, no?
Perhaps admins could agree on some kind of open standard for moderating their instances, a kind of "seal of decency" before federating with them, or singing up for them -
something that basically says "we accept the basics of common courtesy" and that users can easily and quickly recognise

This is the line that where a choice expletive crossed my mind
“This is very risky,” said Andrei Kortunov, head of the Russian International Affairs Council, a Moscow-based research group set up by the Kremlin. “This agreement helped to avoid direct military confrontation in this difficult situation. We don’t want to start World War III.”
Last thought before bed:
The fact that you can't easily transfer identity between instances means _you have a stake in your community_. If you get kicked out, that has real cost - you lose your followers.
That means picking an instance requires care and commitment. I want to see how, as this thing grows, instances can develop individual flavor and values. I see this working really well.
posted this in a dm, but worth another mention
coincidence?
re: recent events
whatever your opinions- it is a significant change in us stance
Like, the fact that "federation is a lie" might be a feature for some subset of users; the not-completely-transparent boundaries between instances are what allows instances to function as autochtonous communities, and thus "third places" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_place)
So, wait, remind me why I should ever use FB/Twitter ever again? What are they giving me for the value they extract from me? Anything I can't find elsewhere without being harvested for crappy targeted ads?
@moonman Here's the thing about harassment on social media; it's not just one account that one can use their agency to block. It's tens, hundreds, or in some cases thousands of accounts, some run by humans, some by bots. It's not always something you can solve by acting "like a thinking human being" as no thinking human being can block fake accounts they don't know about preemptively. Except Charles Xavier maybe, but he's got better things to do. Also he's fictional.
got that creators update a bit early- not an insider though-
pretty interesting new features. . . got some potential in these 3d toys.

@Dereckson
in general, what is this instance intended to be? I am picturing concentric rings as the structure of #mastodon - a wide federal culture and a subculture of the instance? is that accurate? what exactly are dreamers. . .free culture. . . btw intriguing description- thanks also
