There ought to be a better way to understand how 'free' services make their money from the perspective of the average user...
β€”
Just like FDA approved drugs must list their side-effects, free services should be at least ethically obligated to list theirs.
β€”
For example, when signing up for a service like Facebook, Facebook should make it abundantly clear that their business model is building a detailed model about your personality so that they can better control your spending habits.

When I was a young teen, I was listening intently to a story my mother was telling me. I don't remember the story, but I do remember pouring my Pepsi over my hotdog instead of mustard. It's an event that is still fondly remembered at family gatherings.

Yes, it was a soggy hotdog.

@miles I think that's the worst part.

Google Search is embedded in our culture. I specifically say "search for" instead of "Google for" in speech, but it's engrained in the public ala 'Photoshopping'.

Gmail is huge. Chrome is the most popular browser. G+ isn't that big, but still has a presence in social networking.

And ALL OF THEM HAVE ADS.

The only Google service I use is Maps, and even then it's only for looking up phone numbers of businsses not in the phone book.

It was only a matter of time before Google finally revealed their true, evil ways.

You can't block Google ads in Chrome using ad-blockers now.

We all need to IMMEDIATELY stop using Chrome and Chromium.

(I've not used Chrome for two years, but…)

@awilfox I knew it was fishy somehow.

It's like their UNAVOIDABLE AMP thing. I already KNOW that can be used to inject ads. I'm sure it will be someday. It's definitely used for analytics. And Google says "Why would you want to turn it off?"

Doesn't help they promote people who use AMP in search rankings so you HAVE to use it as a news site or *perish* in this era of "people get their news from Google."

(1/2) *I'm making many assumptions in this post so I appreciate it if people correct me*

Pronouns, invented to shorten communication, became gendered when society becomes gendered. Do pronouns really change what people are? Why still have gendered pronouns? If you say for writing, then the assumption is the two people are of opposite gender. If we head towards 'it' and 'they,' it might work better....

@chr @Irick while I do fully understand and even partially agree that CWs are not themselves "killing discussion", it seems to me that constantly using them when not strictly necessary (i.e. talking about general ideas rather than wars or idiotic politicians) makes discourse seem more stressful than it is, which stifles communication and collaboration.

So yeah, keep using CWs for crimes against humanity and talking about those people. But not for ideas. Just my 2p.

I just watched "The Moderators," a documentary by Field of Vision on the outsourcing and effects of digital content moderation.

It's truly worth the watch.

What if the media is hyping up racism and racial tensions in the US not to report on it, but to make it worse?

They show the worst parts and never attempt to show the positive parts of things like #BlackLivesMatter. I went to a local gathering here in Tulsa after the Crutcher murder and everyone had great ideas on how to make positive changes in our community. The media said nothing about that.

There needs to be a non-GMS dependent FOSS breaking news notification app for Android...
