My new article about is out! It's basically like a federated Grooveshark or Soundcloud. The main dev is working on bringing to it.

medium.com/we-distribute/funkw

Also, apologies to everyone, I still haven't set up my site yet, so I'm still actively using Medium. 😞

@nepfag Nope! It doesn't even have a blockchain of instances to block.

@deadsuperhero Huh, how do you ever expect to get billions of VC shekels without a blockchain?

@deadsuperhero This is a really interesting project, and I'm eager to see it gain popularity.

One thing I immediately thought about β€” where the article didn't shed any light β€” is this service meant only for streaming freely distributable music, or could there be any mechanics to pay for streaming or downloading (directly to artists or labels, instead of middleman-corporations)?

@Stoori Hard to say. In terms of features, you can stream any files that the server provides.

As far as Intellectual Property is concerned, that is very much a legal gray area and I'm not sure any means currently exist to pay musicians or labels.

That being said...there's no reason that a payments module of some sort couldn't be developed for such a purpose...

@deadsuperhero I hope something like that got developed at some point, so that Funkwhale could really have chances to attract artists widely and thus challenge big corporations.

In related news, I really like the payment model of Resonate (resonate.is), where you pay cents per streaming and after certain amounts of listening you own a copy of that song and don't have to pay more for it.

My interests are in book distribution, so I also look how these models could be adapted to ebooks/audiobooks

@Stoori Yeah, it's definitely a good thought. Unfortunately accepting payments in a decentralized system is very difficult, architecturally speaking, even when cryptocurrencies are being used for payments.

Though, it's probably less difficult if you're the one selling a product or piece of content. I think where it gets hard involves processing payments intended for third parties, such as an instance paying an artist whose content is hosted elsewhere.

@deadsuperhero All these federated services challenging big corporations have really started to flourish lately, so I'm looking forward to see this whole ecosystem to develop greatly in the future. So if something looks hard now, quite suddenly someone could come with a concept to get it working. I'm hopeful!

@deadsuperhero thank you for the article, it's really comprehensive and clear!

I really appreciate the fact you took some time to dive into the demo and test the features!

@eliotberriot No problem! Your project is super exciting and could be one of several projects that transforms the fediverse into something more media-centric.

@eliotberriot The only thing I couldn't figure out how to do was add music, but I assume that's just because it's a demo instance. I'd love to cover that sometime in the future. :)

@deadsuperhero very nice, now drop #medium and all is fine πŸ˜†

I did this a while ago :

echo 127.0.0.1 medium.com >> /etc/hosts
