Except that they kind of are in the context of exposing someone to an entirely new system that they may neither know about nor care about.
I view this as a similar situation to getting my friends to try GNU/Linux. Most people cannot stick with it because the experience is unfamiliar to them, and they can't run their preferred programs that they are used to.
@starbreaker That being said, I think with social it's at least a little bit easier? In theory you could invite all of your friends onto a specific server, and help them all get connected and using the app.
@deadsuperhero I didn't go that far. I just provided contact details and reassurance that I wasn't leaving Facebook because of them. They have my website, email, and phone number. If they want to, they can get in touch. If not, I have a life of my own to live.
@deadsuperhero I didn't try to persuade my friends and family to migrate to Mastodon. I told each of them, "I'm leaving Facebook as of $DATE. It's not you; it's Zuck. Here are my email and phone number; I'd love to hear from you from time to time."
Facebook doesn't need to be replaced. It just needs to DIE. The tools Facebook subsumed into itself are still available. It's a matter of either remembering or learning how to use them again.
@starbreaker@deadsuperhero One day about a year, maybe a year and a half ago I've got fed up with it and deleted my account. Being perfectly honest, I'm less stressed, I've finally ended some friendships and most importantly, I've got waaay more time now.
Still, I don't *hate* facebook as a platform (not to say that I approve collecting data). I hate Zuck as a man, and I hate userbase, because they're cancerous af.
@deadsuperhero@starbreaker Many people are unwilling and/or unable to move platforms. You can try asking others in your life to move to the Fediverse,-but a great deal of them may choose not to.
In my case, only one other person moved to the Fediverse with me...and if I'm to be honest, he had some history in other Instances before I invited them to Octodon.
Also, I'm only here because @KyokiKafuka invited me...and she's only here because someone invited her. Inviting people DOES work.
Something I would like to try again sometime soon would be to invite a handful of people who all know each other, and facilitate them connecting together on one specific instance. I could try to point them to the best mobile apps that I know of, and try to make the process of getting started really easy.
No guarantee that it'd work, but I think it would give the participants more reason to engage than just stumbling onto a completely unfamiliar space
